Its bowl is made of mulberry wood and its handle is made of walnut wood.

This instrument has remained popular for six thousand years, and in historical documents, a statue in the shape of a TANBUR in the tomb of the prophet Daniel in Susa has been found.

It is the oldest stringed instrument and it is mentioned in ancient legends that Rostam used to play the tambourine in the fourth stanza.

The TANBUR has been mentioned repeatedly in the masterpieces of Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Rumi, Nezami Ganjavi and Hafez.
